perhaps it’s their language
slowly devolving into a flock of birds
the exchange of obsessions between        planets
auditoriums of empty chairs

“Attrition” was written during the constancy of California traffic, the noise of which is so prolific it becomes a sort of silence, like an applause slowly leaving an empty room.
