Either a good man
never walks behind you
or you never stand behind
a good man. If I could recall
where my father stood
when he told me, I’d know.

AUTHOR'S NOTE:

Once I stopped struggling with my inability to remember this moment enough to write a poem about it, I finally realized that the fact that my memory failed me was the poem.

BIO:

Jonterri Gadson is Debra’s daughter. Her poems have previously appeared in Tidal Basin Review, PANK, Sugar House Review, Muzzle and other publications. A Cave Canem fellow and recent graduate of UVA’s MFA program, she is currently a Visiting Assistant Professor at Drake University in Des Moines, IA.
