The Witch, Gretel, the Oven

I.

She laid out gumdrops,
gummed her knuckles
& said, you will be a good mouthful.

II.

She would be a good mouthful.
She painted icing on her face
& wore it like she knew.

III.

She played like
she didn’t know her
way in. The witch wasn’t blind,
but showed her how
& showed her how again.

BIO:

Katy Gunn is currently a first-year MFA candidate at the University of Alabama, where she writes poetry, prose that resembles poetry, poetry that resembles recipes, recipes, and text messages.
